I never knew about this Amazon contest!

By on October 21, 2014

Until yesterday, I had never even heard of this. Amazon has a contest for Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards. Where do you find out about these things? I’ve been an amazon.com customer for a long, long time, and I’ve bought a lot of books, but I don’t ever remember getting any notification of this contest.

Anyway, if I had known about it, I certainly would have submitted my novel Field Piece, The Complete Series. Whoops! That wouldn’t have worked because the book is roughly 165,000 words, whereas the entries have to be between 50,000 and 125,000 words.

Ok, I’ve already missed the 2014 contest, and maybe you have too, but let’s think ahead to next year.  The contest is for novels, and novels only, in the following genres:

  • General Fiction
  • Mystery/Thriller
  • Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror
  • Romance
  • Young Adult Fiction

That’s doable, but when do you need to submit your novel for next year? These are the important dates (Amazon has not specified the 2015 dates yet, so the dates below were the 2014 dates):

  • February 16: Start of the submission period
  • March 2:        End of the submission period

That’s a pretty tight schedule, and only the first 10,000 entries are accepted. I don’t have the numbers of submissions for 2014, but I’ll bet there were a lot more than 10,000 (from authors who actually knew about the contest.  Arghh!)

Find out more about the contest here, and get to work on that novel to win this contest!
